Cyclonic storm “MICHAUNG” : Update related to Sri Lanka

The Met Department says the Cyclonic storm “MICHAUNG” over the Southwest Bay of Bengal is located near latitude 12.8°N and longitude 81.6°E, about 365 km northeast of Jaffna. The system is expected to intensify further and move northwestward away from Sri Lanka towards the North Tamil Nadu coast of India, after which it will cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Therefore, showers or thundershowers are likely to occur in Northern and North-central provinces and the Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts in Sri Lanka today. Fairly heavy showers of about 75 mm are likely in some places. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 01.00 p.m.  

Weather Forecast for sea areas: 

Based on the location of the Cyclonic storm “MICHAUNG” which is about 365 km northeast of Jaffna, the Met Department says it is dangerous to engage in activities in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankasanthurai. Therefore, the Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the mentioned sea areas until further notice. The Naval and fishing communities engaging in activities in the other sea areas around the island are also requested to be vigilant. 

Landslide Warning: 

Landslide warnings have been issued to the Kalutara, Kandy, and Ratnapura Districts due to the inclement weather experienced in Sri Lanka. A yellow alert has been issued to the Wallalawita Divisional Secretariat Division areas in Kalutara and the Kalawana, Kolonna, Elapatha, Openayake, Ratnapura, Eheliyagoda, Balangoda, Imbulpe, Godakawela, Kuruwita and Weligepolaseveral areas in Ratnapura. An Amber alert has been issued to the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division areas in Kandy. (NewsWire)
