Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa has objected to the increase in electricity tariffs, pointing out that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has made huge profits due to a surge in hydropower generation as a result of the heavy rains experienced in the country.
Addressing the Parliament today (Dec 04), MP Premadasa said that even if the electricity charges are increased disregarding his objection, the electricity connection of over 500,000 people has already been disconnected.
He further said that the CEB has also sent Red Notices to over 5 million people warning that their electricity supply will be cancelled.
Questioning if this was a fair move, the Opposition Leader also claimed that the failure of the subject minister to respond to his query today as well, was a violation of his Parliamentary Privilege. (NewsWire)
