President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s political party, the United National Party (UNP), still consists of only 1% voter base in the country, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP S.B. Dissanayake said.
Addressing the media, MP Dissanayake said that the UNP has not progressed since its downfall.
“The other political parties in Sri Lanka, such as the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), and the National Peoples’ Power (NPP) are also facing a decline in their voter base,” he said.
MP Dissanayake pointed out that despite facing severe difficulties in the recent past, the SLPP was the only party that has been growing strong and can boast of at least half the voter base of the 69 million that elected it to power earlier.
“Even if the UNP joins forces with the SJB, SLFP, and NPP, it still would only have a 1% voter base,” he added.
The SLPP MP made the remarks while responding to questions on the SLPP’s thoughts on the Presidential Election which is expected to be held next year. (NewsWire)
