Plans are underway to convert the Bogambara Prison in Kandy into an international five-star hotel, State Minister for Investment Promotion Dilum Amunugama said.
According to Daily News, State Minister Amunugama announced that a local investor had been found for this project.
Stating that a hotel would be operated at the historic Bogambara Prison while maintaining its historic value, the State Minister revealed that it would be built by the Melva Group who built and recently declared open the Yala Hilton.
The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has also received approval from the Department of Archaeology to restructure the Bogambara Prison complex.
Built by British rulers, the three-storied Bogambara Prison in Kandy is the second-largest prison in Sri Lanka and is the longest building in Asia built on a single foundation. After operating for 138 years, the prison was closed in 2014. (NewsWire)
