Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles says several prominent lawyers have taken money in billions and have appeared in court on behalf of those in the drug network.
Minister Alles pointed out that these were the same lawyers who were opposed to the appointment of Senior Police official Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
Speaking during an event in Matara (Dec 16), the minister said that the Police did not have time to address the drug menace in the country due to the ‘Aragalaya’ Peoples Movement in 2022.
He added that this had resulted in the vast spread of the drug network, peddling, and underworld activities in Sri Lanka.
Minister Alles also pointed out that prominent lawyers were representing those involved in drug peddling and they are the same people who want himself and the Police out of their way.
Commenting on rumours that he had pushed for the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the IGP, Minister Tiran Alles said he had expressed his confidence in the Senior Police official as the latter had helped normalise the country following the ‘Aragalaya’ in 2022.
The Public Security Minister said, therefore, he felt that Deshabandu Tennakoon was the right person to head the Police in the battle against drug and underworld activities. (NewsWire)
