New office bearers have been appointed to the Sri Lanka-Myanmar Parliamentary Friendship Association, with MP Upul Galappaththi being appointed as the Chairman.
According to a Parliament statement, the meeting to elect new officers for the Sri Lanka – Myanmar Parliamentary Friendship Association was held at the Parliament under the chairmanship of the Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena recently (Dec 12).
State Minister Sisira Jayakodi was appointed as Secretary, MP (Major) Sudarshana Denipitiya as Assistant Secretary, and MP Asanka Navarathna was also appointed as the treasurer.
The Myanmar Ambassador to Sri Lanka, U. Han Thu participated as the chief guest, while Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapakse, Ministers, State Ministers, Members of Parliament and the Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera were present at the occasion.
Members of Parliament Jagath Kumara Sumithraarachchi, Gamini Waleboda and Karunadasa Kodithuwakku were appointed as Vice Presidents of the Friendship Association.
Addressing the occasion, the Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said there is a long relationship between Sri Lanka and Myanmar in the religious, cultural, and tourism sectors and the establishment of this Parliamentary friendship association would further strengthen that relationship between the two countries.
Also Addressing the meeting, Myanmar Ambassador to Sri Lanka U. Han Thu mentioned that there is an unbroken relationship between Sri Lanka and Myanmar and expressed his gratitude for the support that Sri Lanka provides to Myanmar both internationally and regionally.
MP Upul Galappaththi, the new Chairman of the Association, who spoke at the event, expressed his gratitude for being elected as the Chairman of the Association. He also stated that he is looking forward to working for the further development of bilateral relations between Myanmar and Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
