Weather Alert : Showery conditions to reduce from today

The prevailing showery condition over Sri Lanka is expected to reduce from today (Dec 20), according to the Department of Meteorology.

However, several spells of showers will occur in the Northern, Eastern and Uva provinces and the Polonnaruwa and Matale districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts after 2.00 p.m.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces in the morning.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island in the evening or night.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 40-50 kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthuraivia Puttalam and Mannar and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthuraivia Puttalam and Mannar and from Galle to Hambantota via Matara can be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
