Investigations into the attempt to extort Rs. 50 million from SLFP Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte Chief Organizer Janaka Ranawaka has led to the arrest of SLFP Colombo District Organizer Saman Wijesundera.
Sri Lanka Freedom Party member Janaka Ranawaka had filed a complaint with the Mirihana Police on the extortion attempt.
Thereafter, the OIC of the Organized Crimes Unit of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) Duminda Jayathilaka received death threats via a telephone call from overseas, urging him to refrain from conducting a probe into the extortion attempt.
Investigations found that the suspect identifying himself as ‘Hinnediye Mahesh’ resides in Dubai, UAE, while it was also found that he had made the telephone call on the instructions of an individual based in Sri Lanka.
Further investigations into the telephone call led to the arrest of SLFP Colombo District Organizer Saman Wijesundera and it was found that the caller was his nephew residing in Dubai.
Following his arrest, SLFP Colombo District Organizer Saman Wijesundera was produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court and was remanded until December 27, 2023.
Police investigations have found that the extortion attempt had been made over a land dispute between the two SLFP members. (NewsWire)
