Heavy afternoon showers are expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today, according to the Department of Meteorology.

The showery conditions in the Eastern and Uva provinces are expected to reduce during today and the next two days. A few showers will occur in the Eastern province and the Matale district.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Western and Uva provinces and the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts after 2.00 p.m.

Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in the Galle, Matara and Ratnapura districts.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the morning.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 40-45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Pottuvil to Galle via Hambantota can be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be moderate.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (NewsWire)
