Sri Lanka will face a significant decline in its population in the future due to a drop in birth rate, Emeritus Professor of Demography at the University of Colombo, Prof. Indralal de Silva said.
According to Ada Derana, Prof. de Silva has identified the current drop in the birth rate in Sri Lanka by 25% as one of the key reasons for the future population decline.
Stating that the number of births recorded in Sri Lanka in 2022 shows a decreased figure of 90,000 compared to that recorded in 2013, he pointed out that the current birth rate is approaching the number of deaths.
Prof. de Silva also warned that this situation can further deteriorate due to the country’s youths migrating overseas. (NewsWire)
