Several areas in Sri Lanka have been severely affected due to heavy rains experienced today (Jan 10).
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said the Batticaloa- Polonnaruwa main road will be closed to all traffic until further notice due to a rise in the water levels of the Mahaweli River.
Trains of the Batticaloa line have also been terminated at Polonnaruwa and the night mail train has been cancelled due to flooding.
Meanwhile, traffic has been obstructed in the 7th Mile Post area in Hali Ela on the Badulla – Colombo main road due to an earth slip that occurred due to the inclement weather conditions experienced in the area.
The Met Department has forecasted heavy rains in 10 districts of Sri Lanka for today.
As per the weather forecast effective until 09.30 am tomorrow, heavy rainfall above 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Uva, Eastern and Central provinces and the Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts. (NewsWire)
