Government will take necessary measures to introduce VAT-Free shops Islandwide if the misconception about the Value Added Tax (VAT) on goods is not sorted, Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardena has said.
The Minister said that there is a misconception within the public that all consumer items are eligible for VAT and that it is the reason for the increased prices.
The Minister further said that instructions have already been given to conduct a feasibility study on this regard to select suitable locations belonging to the Road Development Authorities (RDA) for the purpose of establishing VAT-Free shops.
The Minister further said that accordingly, it is planned to take the necessary steps to establish a network of shops all over the country for non-VAT items such as vegetables, rice, baby milk powder for those who are ready to engage in competitive and fair trade. (NewsWire)
