A 51-year-old Police Sergeant who sustained gunshot injuries while arresting a suspect on Saturday succumbed to injuries this morning.
The Police said an altercation had broken out between the suspect and a group of officers from the Malwatuhiripitaya police station, during which the suspect had attempted to grab a police officer’s firearm.
The firearm had then discharged injuring the Police Sergeant, who is a resident of Lunugama, while the suspect had fled the area with the weapon.
Following the incident, the officer was admitted to the Gampaha Hospital and was later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.
The Police arrested the suspect, along with the weapon, while he was in hiding at a residence in Bingiriya.
A 35-year-old woman who had allegedly assisted the suspect has also been taken into Police custody. (NewsWire)
