100th Sakwala donation : SJB reveals progress

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has completed the 100th phase of its ‘Sakwala’ Programme, which was implemented to donate digital screens and computers to state schools.

The 100th phase of the programme got underway under the patronage of Opposition and SJB Leader MP Sajith Premadasa at the Boralesgamuwa Maha Vidyalaya where Rs. 1 million worth of equipment for smart classrooms was donated.

Addressing the occasion, Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa said that the SJB will not halt its ‘Sakwala’ and ‘Husma’ programmes for any reason, stressing that the two programmes have been implemented to benefit the public and are based on scientific data.

“A smart country cannot be created by creating a smart party. It can only be created with smart education and everyone should understand this reality,” he said.

The Opposition Leader gave the following breakdown of the public-benefit programmes carried out by the SJB thus far;

‘Husma’ Programme-

Medicine and supplies worth Rs. 171.9 million have been donated to 56 hospitals.

‘Sakwala’ bus programme –

80 buses, worth Rs. 5 million per bus, were donated to 80 schools for a cost of Rs. 389.2 million.

‘Sakwala’ IT programme-

Smart classroom equipment worth Rs. 99. 2 million has been donated to Rs. 100 schools. (NewsWire)
