The main Opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya has met with the visiting International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation at the Parliamentary complex.
The delegation met with Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa and a group of SJB MPs yesterday.
At the meeting, the SJB members informed the IMF delegation that the various steps taken by the party were to pull the country out of the economic crisis, strengthen investments in the country and strengthen the economic status of the citizens.
The SJB Representatives pointed out that Sri Lanka would not have faced an economic crisis if the government had not previously opposed its calls to reach out to the IMF.
Stating that they are in agreement with the IMF’s road map for Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, the SJB members pointed out that, however, certain clauses require amendments.
Responding to the SJB, the IMF delegation explained that debt restructuring must take place in order for Sri Lanka to move out of the economic crisis and be able to repay its loans.
The SJB members further pointed out that even though tax collection was essential at this juncture, the manner in which taxes are being collected at present needs to be amended.
They further emphasized that tax collection should not be a burden on the public and should be a fair process. (NewsWire)
