Weather Alert : Three updates for Monday

  • Heat Index Advisory for today:

The Met Department has issued a ‘Heat Index Advisory’ for the Northern, North-central, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern, Southern and North-western provinces and Monaragala and Matale districts. 

The ‘Heat index’, the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to increase up to ‘Extreme Caution level’ at some places in the Northern, North-central, North-western and Eastern provinces and Monaragala district, as well as in some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and Matale district.

Heat cramps and exhaustion are possible with prolonged exposure and activity, while continuing activity could result in heat strokes.

  • Today’s weather forecast: 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and Galle and Matara districts after 2.00 pm today. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the North – Western and North-central provinces and Mannar, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu districts during the afternoon or night. 

A few showers may occur over the coastal areas of Puttalam to Galle via Colombo during the morning too. Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces during the morning.

  • Weather forecast for sea areas – 

An advisory has been issued for high waves in the sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Swell waves of about 2.5 m – 3.0 m in height and wave period of about 12 to 16 seconds may increase in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. There is a possibility that near-shore sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Matara via Galle, may experience surges due to swell waves. 

The sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota can be rough at times. The naval and fishing communities engaging in activities in the abovementioned sea areas are requested to be vigilant in this regard. (Newswire)
