Elizabeth K. Horst, nominee to become US Ambassador to Sri Lanka has said that if appointed she looks forward to supporting members of marginalized groups in Sri Lanka, stressing that she shares the US government’s concerns over the island’s human rights situation.
“Sri Lanka has a vibrant civil society, and if confirmed, I look forward to expanding our people-to-people ties, including with the dynamic Sri Lankan American community. I will support members of marginalized populations, accountability, truth and reconciliation, and transparency and justice in Sri Lanka,” Horst said, delivering her opening statement before the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
During the hearing, Chair of the Committee Senator Ben Cardin questioned Horst’s commitment in dealing with Sri Lanka’s accountability issues and the ability to express dissent of government. He made special note of the recent legislations passed by the island’s lawmakers and the US mission’s goal to advance the basic freedoms for the people of Sri Lanka.
“If I am confirmed, you have my commitment to work with your committee and to make sure that we are holding everyone accountable for the international standards we want them to adhere to,” Horst responded. (Newswire)
