17 Sri Lankans killed fighting in Ukraine-Russia war: More reported missing

The Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Human Trafficking, Smuggling and Maritime Crime investigation division has disclosed that 17 Sri Lankans who joined the mercenary forces in the Russian-Ukrainian war have died.

Meanwhile, on Saturday (11), it was reported that two more retired soldiers who went to Russia are missing. Relatives state that no information has been received from them since March 29.

Asanka Chandana, a retired air force officer from the Padaviya area, departed for Russia on February 12 to join the fight in the Russia-Ukraine war. His last communication with his family was on March 29, and no further information has been received since then.

Similarly, Pradeep Chandana, a retired commando officer from Medavachchiya, also left for Russia on February 12. His last contact with his family was on March 29, and there have been no updates since. (NewsWire)
