Weather Alert : Five updates for Friday

  • Weather forecast for Friday : 

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Several spells of showers will occur in the Northwestern, Northern and North-central provinces. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Eastern and Uva provinces in the evening or night. Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces and in the Hambantota district.

  • Weather forecast for sea areas : 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambantota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island.

Winds will be south-westerly and wind speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Mullaitivu to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai, Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

  • Warning for Naval & Fishing communities –

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Mullaitivu to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai, Mannar, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil can be rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. Naval and fishing communities have been requested to remain vigilant in this regard. 

  • Disaster Management Centre warnings:

The Landslides issued to several areas have been moved from Red to Amber and Yellow alerts. As rain is expected in several areas today, the people have been requested to remain vigilant of landslides and rockfalls.

The water level in several rivers has begun receding, resulting in major flood areas changing to minor flood situations. However, several areas remain inundated in the Gampaha and Kalutara districts. 

  • Summary of affected people : 

259,990 people from 68,857 families are severely affected due to the adverse weather conditions experienced in Sri Lanka. 24 deaths have been reported as of June 01, while 13 people have sustained injuries and one person is reported missing. 9695 people from 2310 families remain in 139 safety shelters.
