The Gustav Mahler Orchestra of Colombo, the premier orchestra of Sri Lanka, presents the 2024/25 Season Opening Concert on the 15th of June, 2024 at the iconic Lionel Wendt Theatre, Colombo-07. The concert features Sri Lanka’s foremost Violinist maestro Ananda Dabare as soloist. Maestro Dabare will be performing works of Tchaikovsky, Sarasate and Saint Saens for Violin and Orchestra. The Orchestra is directed by the Chief Conductor and Music Director, maestro Srimal Weerasinghe and the concert will come to a close with Beethoven’s powerful Symphony No.05.
The Gustav Mahler Orchestra is the only orchestra to have sustained its functions despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis in 2022 and the orchestra boasts the largest ensemble of Sri Lanka. The orchestra was invited earlier this year to welcome the Princess Royal HE Princess Anne and her husband Sir Timothy Laurence at the President’s House, and to perform for the Prince and Princess of Kent in Tangalle under the patronage of the President of Sri Lanka. The orchestra hosts several internationally acclaimed musicians from Japan, India and Europe while successfully employing musicians in outreach programs and educational programs in and out of the capital.
The latest concert of the orchestra was held in May, 2024 at the Dutch Reformed Church, Galle in association with UNESCO, and the Embassy of Italy in Colombo. The Season Opening Concert is the fourth concert of the orchestra for the year 2024 and the orchestra will be taking on their first international tour later this year in India.
