Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa says the government has no authority to decide if Sri Lanka is bankrupt or out of bankruptcy, as such decisions are made by international rating agencies based on the country’s financial ability.
MP Premadasa pointed out that according to some recent ratings, Sri Lanka has not yet reached such a situation.
He went on to note that currently, Sri Lanka is in a difficult and bankrupt situation.
“When the debt repayment system is prepared, the international rating companies such as Fitch, Moody’s, and Standard and Poor’s, will use the financial data to declare whether our country is bankrupt or not because our country has entered into a debt repayment system,” he explained.
The Opposition Leader further said after appearing for an examination, the results are not released by the concerned candidates, but by the examination department, adding that similarly, the government cannot decide whether Sri Lanka is bankrupt or not.
“One of the reasons for the decline of this country is the deception, desperation and trickery of the people. The people of a bankrupt country should pay attention to the information and data provided by international financial rating agencies which decide whether the country is bankrupt or not,” he said.
MP Sajith Premadasa made the statement while participating in the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s smart classroom donation campaign held at a school in Kalutara on Monday. (Newswire)
