A special Police operation is to be launched in July to seize illegal firearms in the possession of underworld criminals, it was reported.
According to Lankadeepa newspaper, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon is reported to have given the directive in this regard on Monday.
High-ranking officials of the Sri Lanka Police were informed of the special operation during a special discussion held with the IGP yesterday.
The special operation is to be carried out parallel to the ongoing ‘Yukthiya’ operation, along with the assistance of the tri-forces.
According to the Police, the possession of illegal firearms by underworld criminals has been identified as a serious obstacle to suppressing their activities. (Newswire)
