Former Northern Province Chief Minister C. V. Wigneswaran says the postponement of the Presidential Election will be beneficial for Sri Lanka.

Speaking to the media, MP Wigneswaran said it would benefit the nation if the Supreme Court postpones the election.

“This is because, under the current circumstances, no candidate will receive 50% of votes if the election is held. So the parties will have to work around preferential votes,” he said.

MP Wigneswaran pointed out that such power will change the current stability in the country.

“The country can face a bad situation, which could adversely affect our economy. We are slowly reviving our economy. At such a time, to create instability again is detrimental to our country,” he warned.

Stating that this was his reasoning for delaying the Presidential Election, the MP further said that if it is deemed to be against democracy, so be it, as it would be wise to act taking into consideration the situation of the people, the current stability and the security of the nation.

“We cannot play with the lives of the people. I think it will be best to postpone the elections. Now, it is in the decision of the Supreme Court,” he added. (Newswire)
