Weather Alert : Rain expected in some areas today

Showers are expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today, according to the Department of Meteorology. 

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. 

Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely in some places. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Uva province and Ampara and Batticaloa districts in the evening or night. 

Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times in Northern and North-central provinces and Trincomalee and Hambantota districts. 

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle. 

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly and speed will be 25-35 kmph. The wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. The wind speed can increase up to 45-50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo. 

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be very rough at times. The sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be slight. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
