The runway development project at Hingurakgoda Airport was officially declared open by Minister of Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva today.
According to the Sri Lanka Air Force, under the project, Hingurakgoda Airport is set to become Sri Lanka’s 6th International Airport.
In June this year, Cabinet approval was granted to develop the Hingurakgoda Airport as a complete airport as per the recommendations of the committee appointed to prepare the master plan and other related tasks for the airport.
At the time, the government said the Hingurakgoda Airport is currently operated under the management of the Sri Lanka Air Force and the need to develop the airport in accordance with international civil aviation standards has been identified.
Accordingly, a committee consisting of representatives of the Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Civil Aviation Authority, Airports and Aviation Company (Sri Lanka) (Pvt.) Ltd and Road Development Authority was appointed for the preparation of the master plan for the airport and other related tasks.
The Cabinet approved the joint proposal presented by the President and the Minister of Aviation to make preparations to develop Hingurakgoda Airport as a complete airport as per the recommendations of the said committee. (Newswire)
