Presidential Poll date : Update from Election Commission

The National Election Commission (NEC) states the poll date for the Presidential Election will be announced next week.

Speaking to the media, Election Commission Chairperson R.M.A.L. Rathnayake said that the announcement will include the poll date and the calling of nominations.

He further explained that despite having the authority to declare the said election from Wednesday (17), the Commission requires time to announce the poll date as it needs to pick a suitable date.

The election date will be set for the earliest possible date after September 17, ensuring it is optimal for voter turnout, Ratnayake said.

“There is no possibility to announce the poll date 63 days after having received authority. This was so, as the period is from July 17 to September 17, but September 17 is Poya Day. The following day also cannot be picked as the Election Commission will not be able to set up the necessary election booths at religious places the previous day,” he explained, highlighting that various factors, such as the availability of employees to staff polling stations must be considered.

He assured that nothing would affect the election’s scheduled date and that the dates would align with the Constitution and the Presidential Elections (Special Provisions) Act, No. 2 of 1981.

The Election Commission Chairman made the remarks after concerns were raised by various parties alleging delaying the polls. (Newswire)
