The National Election Commission has decided to submit a notice to the President’s Secretary, informing that an Inspector General of Police (IGP) or an acting IGP be appointed.
Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake said the notice will be submitted in writing to the President’s Secretary.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the National Election Commission convened today.
The move comes after the Supreme Court last week issued an order restraining Deshabandu Tennakoon from exercising the powers, functions, and responsibilities of the office of IGP.
Following the Supreme Court order, concerns were raised that the Presidential polls, scheduled for September 21, may face obstacles over the deployment of Police personnel for the polls.
However, Election Commission Chairperson R.M.A.L. Rathnayake has assured that the current situation regarding the post of IGP does not hinder the activities related to the Presidential Election.
According to The Sunday Morning, he has emphasized that while the Police Department may face some internal challenges due to the problematic situation which has arisen, the Presidential Election will proceed as planned. (Newswire)
