A total of 39 candidates will contest the 2024 Presidential Election, the National Election Commission announced today.
According to the Election Commission, 39 candidates handed in their nominations during the acceptance of nominations from 09.00 am to 11.00 am held today.
Following the acceptance of nominations, the Election Commission had received 03 objections.
One objection had been filed by Battaramulla Seelarathana Thera without stating a particular candidate, while two objections had been received against the former Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Janaka Ratnayake.
However, after considering the objections, the Election Commission members unanimously decided to reject the objections as per the provisions of the Election Law.
As such, the Election Commission announced that all 39 candidates who had handed in their nominations today are eligible to contest the 2024 Presidential Election.
The Election Commission further said that among the 39 candidates, 22 are from recognized political parties, 1 from other parties and 16 independent candidates.
Dilith Jayaweeera, ASP Liyanage, Sarath Fonseka, Nuwan Bopage, Oshala Herath, Janaka Ratnayake, Siripala Amarasinghe, Ariyanenthiran, Namal Rajapaksa, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Sajith Premadasa, Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Anura Kumara Dissanayake are among the candidates who will be contesting the 2024 Presidential Election scheduled for September 21.
