National Democratic Front’s presidential candidate Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe criticized the Election Commission for failing to maintain discipline during the process of handing over nomination papers earlier today.
“Previously, the Election Commission maintained discipline similar to that of a court, with seriousness and respect upheld. This time, however, it resembled Kopi Kade in the village where various gangs had formed,” Rajapakshe said.
The behaviour those hoping to be the first citizen of the country, was regrettable, the former Minister said, addressing media after he handed over his nomination papers to Election Commission officials.
“There were dummy candidates, solely to promote one candidate,” Rajapakshe charged. “There were at least 15 to 20 such people for one candidate. They behaved like thugs in gangs,” he said.
Rajapakshe urged the Election Commission to maintain discipline among candidates. “Before we ask the people to maintain discipline, we should lead by example,” he said, adding that it was the responsibility of the Commission.
The former Justice Minister also appeared to have fallen out with SLFP faction leader Maithripala Sirisena, who earlier this year announced that Rajapakshe would be the presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
Asked if Rajapakshe is aware of reports which indicate Sirisena will join the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Rajapakshe said that it would be a positive development.
“I feel it would be good if he goes like that,” Rajapakshe said. (Newswire)
