Three Police officers involved in the death of a wild elephant in the Bakamuna area have been suspended from service, it was reported.
According to Lankadeepa newspaper, the Polonnaruwa Senior Police Officers’ Office said the suspended officers were a Police Sergeant and two Constables.
The three Police officers were attached to the Bakamuna Police Station at the time of the incident.
The Police officers who were engaged in patrolling duties had fired at the elephant while on night patrol last week (Aug 15).
Following the shooting the wild elephant had succumbed to injuries on the spot. The Police officers were arrested by the area wildlife officials in connection to the elephant’s death.
The arrested Police officers were produced in court after which they were released on bail. (Newswire)
