The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has warned the public of a fake National Election Commission website, advertising job opportunities at the Commission for the 2024 Presidential Election.

Issuing a notice, SLCERT informed the public that the fake (phishing) website was being used for cyber-fraud activities.

SLCERT urged the public to verify details before falling victim to such fake websites and warned not to divulge personal information.

Detected on Friday (09 Aug), the phishing website hosted on a US-based Google server was found to be designed to collect personal information of Sri Lankans by using the national emblem of Sri Lanka and the name of the Election Commission.

Following the flagging by SLCERT, US-based Google LLC responded on August 12 confirming that they had removed the content.

According to the Sunday Times, the Computer Crime Investigation Division (CCID) said Google LLC is yet to reveal the identity of those who hosted the fake (phishing) website.

The CCID further said after the Election Commission alerted about the fake website, the CCID, SLCERT, and the Election Commission collaborated effectively to have the site taken down from the Google domain within three days. (Newswire)
