Former MP Nandana Gunathilake has claimed that the JVP was behind the 2022 Aragalaya movement.

Speaking at a Puluwan Sri Lanka rally in support of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Gunathilake accused the JVP of having a history rooted in violent revolution.

“For a long time, the JVP didn’t even throw a stone. But in 2022, their buried anti-democratic violence resurfaced,” he said.

Acknowledging that various groups were involved in the Aragalaya, Gunathilake alleged that the JVP eventually took control of the movement, claiming that NPP members Sunil Handuneththi and K.D. Lalkantha were key instigators of the violence.

Gunathilake warned that whether the NPP wins or loses the election, there is concern they may incite violence in the country.

Nandana Gunatilake, a former MP from the JVP and their Presidential candidate in 1999, later quit the party and is now supporting President Ranil Wickremesinghe. (Newswire)
