The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has announced that all votes cast for the late presidential candidate Mr. Idroos Mohamed Illias, who passed away on August 22, will be rejected.

Illias had been nominated for the presidential election scheduled for September 21, 2024. Despite the opportunity to nominate a replacement within three days, his nominee, Mr. K.M.N. Sanjaya Sampath Reman, failed to do so.

As a result, the name of Mr. Illias will be removed from the ballot paper. If any votes are cast for him, they will be considered invalid and rejected. The Election Commission, in accordance with sub-section 22(1)(b) of the Presidential Elections Act No. 15 of 1981, has issued clear instructions regarding this matter.
