Sri Lanka ended Day 2 of the Test match in Galle against New Zealand in a commanding position, posting a massive 602/5 and reducing the visitors to 22/2. Veteran cricketer Angelo Mathews attributed the team’s recent success to head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, calling him a “turning point” in Sri Lankan cricket.

Mathews praised Jayasuriya’s leadership, stating, “He was superb as cricket director and now as coach. He communicates well, gives us freedom, and has done an amazing job grooming young players.”

Highlighting Jayasuriya’s influence, Mathews added, “We are working towards one goal, and everyone is on the same page. He has been amazing in guiding us to play the Sri Lankan way of cricket.”

Mathews also praised Kamindu Mendis for his record-breaking career, after Mendis became the fastest Asian batter to score five Test centuries. When asked why Mendis was left out after scoring 61 on his debut in 2022, Mathews responded, “Then selectors should answer those” (Newswire)
