Bribery Commission DG gives undertaking to resign

Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) Kanishka D. Wijeratne has given an undertaking to resign from office, after the Supreme Court granted leave to proceed.

This was following a Fundamental Rights petition filed in the Supreme Court by Transparency International Sri Lanka, challenging the appointment of Wijeratne as the Director General of CIABOC.

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed High Court Judge Wijeratne as CIABOC Chief in April this year.

Wijeratne, who had previously served as the DG of CIABOC since January 2020, was reappointed to the same position following the enactment of the new Anti-Corruption Act.

“TISL’s petition contends that Mr. Wijeratne’s appointment violates provisions of the Anti-Corruption Act, lacks procedural integrity and transparency,” the TISL said in a statement.

The petitioners also argued that he does not meet all statutory requirements and criteria for the DG role. (Newswire)
