The government is considering the possibility of allowing vehicle imports in a systematic manner, without negative impacts on the foreign exchange and avoiding another Dollar crisis, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath said.
Addressing the media today, Minister Herath revealed there was a great demand for vehicle imports and also a previous Cabinet decision related to the matter.
He further said that, however, the new government has not allowed any urgent vehicle imports or concessionary imports after being elected to power.
“We are considering vehicle imports under a proper system that does not affect the foreign exchange or cause another Dollar crisis. We are looking at providing a way to deal with the demand for vehicle imports,” he said.
Minister Vijitha Herath clarified that since being elected to power, the government has not allowed any vehicle imports with tariff concessions.
He added that the government is, however, of the stance that vehicle imports must be permitted but in a controlled manner. (Newswire)
