Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organizer Namal Rajapaksa said that he decided not to contest the parliamentary election, as he has a responsibility to support the party’s candidates to secure victory.

“I have a responsibility to my party to support all our candidates to secure victory. If I were to contest the election from the Hambantota district, a majority of my time would have been dedicated to the people of that district,” he said.

“Therefore the party decided that I should take on a more operational role with this election, which I agreed to. I will work to secure victory for our candidates,” Rajapaksa explained.

He also said that several senior party members leaving the SLPP was a political victory for the party. “Some alliances are not meant to be, which led to several seniors leaving the party. I’m happy that a group with a common view stayed with the party. The JVP may have won the election, but we were politically victorious.” (Newswire)
