A civil society activist has filed a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court, challenging the Election Commission’s decision to hold the Parliamentary Elections on November 14.
Priyantha Herath, the convenor of the ‘Api Sri Lanka’ organization, lodged the petition, asserting that the necessary procedures stipulated in the Parliamentary Elections Act have been violated.
The petition claims that authorities did not properly call for nominations or set the election date according to legal provisions.
Earlier this month, Election Commission General Saman Ratnayake dismissed claims circulating on social media that the election date was unconstitutional.
Ratnayake explained, “Nomination ends on October 11th, and the law states that from that date, including the day of nominations, there must be a five-week interval. This date is correct.” He made these remarks in response to concerns raised about the November 14th election date.
The petition by Herath and the assertions from other activists allege that the November 14th date violates the legal requirement.
The Supreme Court is expected to review the merits of this challenge in the coming days. (NewsWire)
