The Department of Wildlife Conservation has commenced a probe into a video shared on YouTube of a foreign national and four Indigenous people hunting, slaughtering and eating a peacock at the Maduru Oya National Park.
The video footage, shared on the channel ‘Go With Ali’ shows the group hunting a peacock, cooking it over a woodfire, and eating it inside the National Park.
Director General of the Department of Wildlife Conservation Chandana Sooriyabandara said investigations are launched to trace the foreign national and the four Indigenous people who had illegally entered the National Park
The group is accused of trespassing into the Maduru Oya National Park, setting a fire, hunting and killing a protected bird, and sharing it on social media.
A similar incident had previously been reported where a foreigner and four Indigenous people from the Damabana area had also illegally entered the Maduru Oya National Park, slaughtered and eaten a peacock.
The case in this regard is being deliberated at the Mahiyangnaya Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
