A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition has been filed at the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka contesting the candidacy of actor-turned-politician Ranjan Ramanayake in the 2024 General Election.

A member of an independent group contesting in the Gampaha District filed the FR petition at the Supreme Court today.

The petitioner has requested the court to issue an order rejecting the nomination paper of Ranjan Ramanayake who is set to contest from the Gampaha District representing the United Democratic Voice party.

The petitioner has sought for a ruling on the grounds that Ranjan Ramanayake has no right to vote or sit in Parliament.

Former MP Ranjan Ramanayake, the National Election Commission, and Returning Officers of the Gampaha District are named as respondents. (Newswire)
