A man has been arrested for creating a fake currency note bearing the image of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, it was reported.

The suspect was arrested in Piliyandala yesterday by officials from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

According to reports, he is accused of having released the fake Rs. 5000 note on social media.

The incident comes against the backdrop of recent claims that the new government had printed currency notes after being elected to power.

However, the government and the Central Bank denied the claims, pointing out that new currency notes require the signature of the Finance Minister.

Stating that the President, who is the Finance Minister has not provided his signature for any such purpose, the government also pointed out that there were no currency notes bearing the President’s signature or image in the local market.  (Newswire)
