The new Surgical Unit at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital, built with Indian grant assistance of over LKR 300 million, was inaugurated on Monday (Nov 04).
Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and Sri Lanka’s Health Ministry Secretary Dr. P. G. Mahipala inaugurated the new Surgical Unit.
The unit is expected to reduce waiting lists for surgeries at the hospital by 50% and benefit nearly 5000 new patients each year, considerably improving access to quality healthcare services in the region.
According to the Ministry of Health, the surgical unit consists of 360 patient beds, 10 surgical intensive care beds, and 03 operating theatres.
It has been provided under the Indian Government’s construction and supply of medical equipment project for the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.
The Health Ministry added that the surgical unit being vested with the public will further enable the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital to strengthen the health services provided to the people of the Eastern Province and adjacent districts. (Newswire)
