Three officers of the Giranegama Police Station in Anuradhapura, including its OIC, who were arrested for allegedly facilitating a group of suspects to gamble inside a holding cell, have been released on bail.

Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that the Police officers had been arrested on the instructions of the Acting IGP after a video of the incident had been circulated on social media.

Following their arrest, the three Police officers had been produced before the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court on sureties of Rs. 200,000 each.

Providing details on the incident, the Police Spokesman told the media that the suspects had been arrested while engaging in gambling at a funeral house in July this year.

The group who was heavily intoxicated had been brought to the Police Station by the said Police officers, including the OIC, and had been placed in a holding cell.

DIG Thalduwa said the suspects had somehow managed to start gambling while inside the holding cell as well. (Newswire/ Image – MediaLK)
