National Peoples’ Power (NPP) MP Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala has been appointed as the Speaker of the 10th Parliament of Sri Lanka.
Dr. Ranwala’s name was nominated by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuirya and proposed to the new Parliament by Minister Vijitha Herath.
He is a first-time Member of Parliament being appointed as the Speaker during his first Parliament sitting.
Dr. Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala is a graduate of the University of Moratuwa as a Chemical Engineer and was employed at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and the Sapugaskanda Refinery. He also serves as the President of the Petroleum Public Employees Union.
Previously, he has represented the Biyagama Local government body once and the Western Provincial Council twice as a member elected.
He has also completed his PhD in Biochemistry from Waseda University, Japan and has also served as the director of BioGenic Green Technology Research Institute, which is aimed at developing sustainable biogenic agricultural practices.
Dr. Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala was appointed as the Speaker during the inaugural session of the 10th Parliament of Sri Lanka which commenced this morning.
Following the recently concluded General Election, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s National Peoples’ Power (NPP) won a clear 2/3rds majority in Parliament. (Newswire)
