The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for heavy rains in several areas, effective until 04.00 pm tomorrow, due to the low-pressure area over the South-East Bay of Bengal.
The low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression over the central-southwest Bay of Bengal this morning, moving to about 530 km southeast of Trincomalee.
It is likely to move closer to the east coast of Sri Lanka and intensify into a deep depression during the next 24 hours.
Accordingly, very heavy showers above 150 mm are likely at some places in the Northern province and Trincomalee district.
Heavy showers above 100 mm are also likely at some places in the Northern, North-central, Central and Uva provinces and the Batticaloa and Ampara districts due to the system’s influence.
The Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the sea areas around the island until further notice.
The public is requested to be vigilant regarding impending extreme weather situations from today until Wednesday (27 Nov). (Newswire)
