- Advisory issued for heavy rains;
An advisory has been issued for heavy rains in the Northern, Eastern, Central and Uva provinces, effective until 04.30 am tomorrow. The prevailing Showery conditions are expected to continue further due to the depression in the vicinity of Sri Lanka.
Very heavy showers above 200 mm are likely at some places in the Northern, Eastern, Central and Uva provinces. Heavy showers of about 100 mm are likely at some places in the North-central province and Puttalam districts today.

The Depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, which was located southeast about 290km of Batticaloa and 410 km of Trincomalee, is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression during the next 12 hours and move very closer to the east coast of Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, cloudy skies are expected over most parts of the island due to the influence of this system and very heavy showers and strong winds can be expected in the Northern, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces today.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in most places on the island. Very heavy showers above 150 mm are likely in some places in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Central, Uva and Southern provinces and the Puttalam district. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at several places elsewhere on the island. Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over Northern, North-central, Central and Eastern provinces and in Hambantota district.

The Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the deep and shallow sea areas around the island from today, until further notice.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas around the island. The sea areas around the island will be rough to very rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
Winds will be north-easterly in direction in the sea areas around the island. Wind speed will be 40- 50 kmph and Wind speed can increase to 60-70 kmph at times in the sea areas around the island. (Newswire)
