Inclement weather : Tri-forces engage in relief activities

The tri-forces have been deployed to provide relief to those facing various disaster situations due to the inclement weather experienced in the country, Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha said. 

Addressing a special media briefing today, the Defence Secretary said that Air Force, Army, and Navy personnel will be deployed for relief activities across the nation as required. 

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Navy says it has dispatched 11 relief teams to the districts of Ampara, Batticaloa and Matara to provide necessary aid and support to communities affected by the adverse weather conditions experienced in the areas.                                      

With the heavy rainfall, Wellaweli, Suduwella and Oluvil in Ampara, Karaitivu, Navinnaveli and Pothuvil in Kalmunai, Nosalanamale in Batticaloa and Akuressa, Athuraliya, Balakawala and Arampathwala area in Matara were inundated and these 11 relief teams were deployed to these areas for flood relief duties.  

Furthermore, the Puttalam- Anuradhapura Road in the Sirambiadi area which was obstructed due to a fallen tree has been cleared by Sri Lanka Army personnel. 

The tree had fallen over due to strong winds and heavy rain in the area yesterday obstructing traffic. Within a short time of the incident, the Army personnel had cleared the tree and repaired the road making it suitable for vehicle movement. 

The Sri Lanka Air Force has engaged in air surveillance to identify areas affected due to adverse weather in Sri Lanka.

The SLAF said a Bell 212 aircraft was deployed to conduct surveillance of the Ampara District today. 

During the operation, Air Force personnel rescued an affected civilian from the Mayilawattavan area in Eravur. (Newswire)
