The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, located to the east about 110 km of Trincomalee, is likely to move closer to the East coast of Sri Lanka and intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the next 06 hours.
Under the influence of the system, cloudy skies will prevail over most parts of the island and very heavy showers and strong winds can be expected in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-western and Central provinces. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern, North-central, Central, Western, and Northwestern provinces and the Trincomalee and Kegalle districts. Very heavy showers above 150 mm are likely in some places. Showers will occur at times elsewhere on the island too. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely in some places.
Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over Northern, North-central, Central, Western, North-western, Southern and Eastern provinces. The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
- Flood warning:
Flood warnings have been issued to several areas due to a rise in the water levels of the Kelani, Nilwala, and Mahaweli Rovers, and the Yan, Maa, Malwathu, Maha, and Attanagallu Oyas as of this evening.
Yello flood alerts have been issued to several areas near the Kelani River, while a minor flood has been reported in Thalgahagoda due to the Nilwala River. Minor floods have been reported in Mannampitiya and Padeniye due to the Mahaweli River.
Minor floods have been reported in Horowpathana (Yan Oya), Thanthirimale (Malwathu Oya), Badalgama (Maha Oya), and Dunamale (Attanagallu Oya), while yellow flood alerts have also been issued to other areas in the vicinity.
- Landslide warning:
The National Building Research Organization has issued landslide warnings to 09 districts, effective until 04.00 pm tomorrow.
Red alerts have been issued to some areas of the Kandy, Matale, and Nuwara Eliya districts. Amber alerts have been issued to some areas of the Badulla, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Yellow alerts have been issued to some areas of the Badulla, Colombo, Gampaha, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts. (Newswire)
