Monk among 10 arrested for 15 million worth gemstone robbery

Ten suspects have been arrested in connection with a robbery committed on November 10 in the Laggala area of the Matale police division, police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa revealed today (1st).

According to the complaint, the suspects arriving in a van entered the house, tied up the occupants, and stole valuables worth over Rs. 60 million, including cash and a gemstone valued at over Rs. 15 million.

Investigating officers were able to track the suspects and recover the gemstone, which had been divided into seven pieces and sold at a location in Galle.

The police have arrested 10 suspects, including a monk from a temple in the Mawathagama area. It was revealed that the gang initially planned to commit a bank robbery but, unable to execute it, targeted the house after learning about the valuable gemstone.

The police spokesman further stated that most of the stolen valuables, including gold jewelry, have been recovered. Efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining cash and apprehend two more suspects. (NewsWire)
