Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has commended the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea for the swift and unified action taken to resist the rule by martial law.
Issuing a statement, former President Wickremesinghe said that President Yoon Suk Yep’s declaration of Martial Law threatened the democratic system in the Republic of Korea.
“The unity shown by the Parliament both from the Opposition and those supporting the administration is certainly worthy of international recognition. This shows the strength of Parliament under an Executive Presidency. It is in the interest of the Republic of Korea to resolve this Constitutional crisis peacefully,” he added.
Former President Wickremesinghe’s comments come after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s cabinet was made to reverse a martial law order in the country, just hours after he issued the surprise decree that plunged Seoul into political uncertainty and sparked fierce backlash from lawmakers across the political spectrum.
The cabinet decision came after Yoon backtracked on his shortlived decree in the early hours of Wednesday local time and withdrew the troops deployed to carry out the order.
South Korean lawmakers – who had scrambled earlier in the night to block the martial law order with a parliamentary vote – are now calling for resignations.
The opposition Democratic Party says it will begin impeachment proceedings against President Yoon if he doesn’t step down immediately. (Newswire)
